Flying Pig Weekend

4 May

Wow…I know if has been a few days since I’ve posted.  Things have gotten a little crazy in this household.  But my big news is that my Dad and I finished the Flying Pig Half-Marathon on Sunday!  Here’s a recap of the weekend:

Dad and I decided to leave Louisville early on Saturday so that we had plenty of time to play around in Cincinnati.  Saturday was also Derby Day here in Louisville and it is always pretty crazy.  Truthfully, it was nice for a change of pace.  The Derby Festival lasts for 2 weeks and there are parties and events and LOTS of people.

Just before we hit Cincinnati, Dad and I hit up Skyline Chili.  I love Skyline and as a native of close to Cincinnati, the hubby does too.  Skyline always hits the spot.  YUM!!!  We then headed to the Duke Energy Center to pick up our packets.  Never before have I been to such a large expo!  I don’t remember the Disney expo being that large when my Dad did the marathon (but that was a LONG time ago).  We got our packets and then headed through the snake that was the expo to try and get our shirts and poster.  I also found out that we got a duffle bag as well!  Once we saw the shirts we headed to the official Flying Pig store at the expo.  Dad found a shirt that he loved but I couldn’t find a regular t-shirt (the race shirts were technical) that fit me or said half-marathon.  I saw several shirts that said 26.2 miles but since I wasn’t doing 26.2 miles I didn’t get them.  In the end, I got another tech shirt that could pass as a regular shirt.  I’m hoping to wear it soon.  We then realized that we had already spent 1.5 hrs in the expo and had to head back to the car to put more money in.

We went back through the expo to buy some GU Chomps that we had taste tested when we went around the first time.  We also passed by the Juicy Juice and Nesquik table.  Juicy Juice now has sparkling juice that they were giving out whole cans of.  I took several of each kinds.  I love juice!  We moved to the next table and Nesquik was giving out full bottles of chocolate milk!  I knew both me and the hubs would love it.  They ended up giving me 2 jugs that I was more than happy to lug around the expo.  I also got LaraBar samples (already tried the Peanut Butter Cookie and LOVE it.  I will be trying to recreate it once I find some dates!) as well as Cascadian Farm Organic Granola Bars.  I will try the granola bars soon.

I think free stuff is one of the reasons I love expos soooooo much!

Dad suggested going to a Reds game on Saturday night but after talking to the hubby, I found out they were away in St. Louis.  However, he did tell me that there was a Cyclones hockey playoff game that night.  Dad was really excited because he loves hockey.  He has been in a beginner league over the past year and uses every opportunity to see a game.

After finally checking into the hotel, we walked across the bridge and bought tickets for the game.  We then took a siesta where Dad actually slept while I made every effort too.  Alas, I was not able to fall asleep but I did wake Dad up in time to watch the running of the Kentucky Derby.  Congrats Super Saver and Calvin Borel!

Then we headed to the game!  One thing that I was really excited about before we got to the game was the mascot.

Of course, Dad and I had to get a t-shirt.  Then we sat down to watch the game right behind the glass!

I may have gotten a little too into the game.

I LOVE the mascot, Twister!

We left a little early and I still don’t know who won!  It was tied when we left.

We walked back to our hotel and got into bed a little before 10:30.  A late hockey game before a half-marathon was probably not the smartest of ideas…but it was sooooo much fun!  I will be posting my recap of the actual race later.  I thought this post was getting waaaaay too long!
